It is a book written with sincerity. The author has done justice with the subject and his selection criteria for each person to be ranked has been absolutely logical, practical and scientific. This book is just an expression of great research. However Quran was no written by prophet Muhammed (may Allah be pleased with him) it was revealed to him(Muhammed PBUH ) by God Almighty Allahatala

A well researched book, listing a galaxy of personalities from history, though over whelming majority from the Christian west. What is missing from the list I think are few important names like Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ibn Rushd (Averroes), Omar Khayyam, Imam Ghazzali, these are people who have influenced many listed in this book. The listing of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on top of the list has not come as a great surprise to me. About Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Allah says in the holy Qur?an (94:4) And exalted for you your esteem? This was said at a time when no one could even conceive how the esteem of the one unique individual who had only a few followers confined only to the city of Makkah, would be exalted throughout the world, and what high fame he would achieve. But Allah Almighty gave His Messenger (upon whom be peace) this good news under those very conditions and then fulfilled it in a strange way. Today, apart from muslims many non-muslims like George Bernard Shaw, Professor R Rao, Thomas Carlyle, Monygomery Watt, Edward Gibbon etc all have acknowledged the greatness of prophet Muhammd (pbuh). Michael Hart's ratings are based on the individual's influence in the world and the long lasting impact of his thinking. In that context, his rating of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam is obviously correct. His comments about the Prophet however are incorrect and detract from the credibility of the book. For example his comment that Muhammad wrote the Qur'an is incorrect. The Qur'an was a revelation which came to Muhammad over a period of 23 years and 40 scribes among his followers recorded what he used to recite as it came to him. He could not read or write and never learnt to do either all his life. This fact is one of the many evidences about the Divine origin of the Qur'an because it contains many things that an unlettered man of his time could neither have imagined nor written. The Qur'an contains information about the universe and its creatures that was not part of the knowledge base of the time of Muhammad, yet he announced those things as being from his Lord, Allah, the Creator of the Universe. To say that Muhammad wrote the Qur'an, as Michael Hart has done is therefore completely wrong and goes against what has been recorded in history.
