Hike #67: Mazama Trail
The Mazamas, Portland's first outdoor club, held its inaugural meeting on top of Mt. Hood in 1893, when 155 men and 38 women trekked to the snowy summit to elect the club's first president. A century later the club decided to give something back to its baptismal peak by restoring an abandoned trail on the mountain's beautiful, less-visited north flank.
The newly completed Mazama Trail may not be the quickest route to Mt. Hood's alpine glories both Hikes #66 and #68 describe nearby routes with 1000 feet less elevation gain but as the Mazamas proved with their 1893 meeting on Mt.
