Synopsis
Excerpt from A Moving-Belt People Mover for Columbia Point: A Report on a Term Project by Students and Faculty Involved in the Urban Laboratory in Mechanical Engineering, June 1972
The course has evolved through a number of variations over the past five years. The first year's theme was technological aid to developing countries. After the first four weeks of the semester the class formed into groups of about four students each on the basis of similar (individual) project proposals. After discussion and compromise each group selected a single project. Volunteer faculty advisors were approached, and one was attached to each group. Actual project work commenced about five weeks after the beginning of the term.
In order to shorten this long initial period (during which time the interest of some students waned), two changes were instituted the following year. The problem pollution in Boston-was chosen in advance by the teaching staff and broken down into ten specific problem areas, also chosen beforehand through discussions by the faculty-member ih-charge with people in local government and industry who would be willing to talk to the class about their fields and to act as non - paid clients for the rest of the semester. Faculty advisors were also lined up in advance, and the six student groups chose projects during the first two weeks of the semester.
