It may perhaps be well to remark that, in illustrating the T avoletle, I have credited the reader with at least as much knowledge of the history of the Commune as may be obtained, for example, from a perusal of the article Sigma in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and have therefore dwelt at greater length on such pictures as rep resent or symbolize comparatively little known events, like the Pestilence of 1437 and the earth quakes of 1467, than upon those which depict battles and treaties of European importance or_3.
