Synopsis
Excerpt from A Short Appeal to the House of Commons, in Answer to the Charges Brought Against the Inhabitants of Mauritius, More Particularly in a Pamphlet by John Jeremie, Entitled Recent Events at Mauritius
The efforts which have been made to blacken the character and conduct of the inhabitants of Mauritius, renderitneces sary to bring before the house a concise, unvarnished, state ment of facts, imperfectly known, and by the enemies of the island strangely misrepresented. The charges which have been Specifically made may be reduced to two general heads: Disaffection to the British government, manifested in the years 1832 and 1833, by an extensive and organized scheme of revolt: and the continuance, down to a recent period, of the inhuman and unlawful traffic in slaves.
