S'il arrive que des individus de tribus alliees soient englobes dans un coup de filet des chasseurs d'hommes, Joubert exige et obtient leur mise en liberte. Advient il qu'un chef voisin se permette de saccager un village et d'en capturer la population, Joubert le force en son repaire et lui arrache ses prisonniers. C'est ainsi qu'il enleva a Katele une centaine d'esclaves.

Depuis lors, Joubert a consacre sa vie a l'oeuvre an tiesclavagiste, pour laquelle il a fait trois voyages en Afrique. Le dernier qu'il entreprit, et qui parait devoir le fixer pour toujours au milieu des negres, avait pour objet la protection des Peres Blancs de Mpala, laisses a la merci des Arabes par suite du rappel du capitaine Storms en Belgique. Ici, comme ailleurs, le vaillant defenseur des opprimes ne sait que se devouer de la, l'audace de ses faits de guerre, l'aveugle confiance que lui vouent ses conscrits, le respect dont l'entourent les indigenes et la crainte salutaire qu'il inspire aux Arabes.
