Synopsis
All Cloudless Glory is George Washington's story, told largely by George Washington himself. Our nation's first president, who was blessed with a remarkable memory, left behind a wealth of autobiographical materials, including letters, diaries, and papers. It is largely from these first-person accounts that Harrison Clark has put together this masterwork.
In the first volume you'll meet a youthful Washington, one not yet transformed into the dignified figure we associate with our first president. Harrison Clark traces the life of our first president from his formative years to the brink of military victory at Yorktown. Clark found not only a military leader and a statesman, but a "universal genius". He was also an explorer in the spirit of Daniel Boone's opening up of the Virginia frontier.
In the second volume Clark follows Washington through the end of his career as a great general, through his years as a statesman and president, to his final days at Mount Vernon. Expertly weaving historical narrative with Washington's own words, Clark observes Washington's role as chairman of the Constitutional Convention, his two-term presidency, and his private difficulties.
The Washington that emerges from Clark's portrait is truly admirable -- a sensitive man of firm convictions and dedicated religious faith, a man of uncommon virtues and abilities, the indispensable man in America's founding.
