It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Yes, I know, I am a decade behind the curve here, but still: this was the best book I read this year. So, as the cliche goes, Better Late Than Never!

Set during the rush to capitalize on the success of Superman during the Golden Age of Comics, writers and illustrators create powerful alter-ego superheroes while feeling impotent to rescue family and friends from the Holocaust and the Nazis. Chabon captures the Pow! Bam! and Zap! of the comic book era combined with the poignancy and the humanity of people caught in a struggle with evil villains and personal demons worse than those their superheroes fight.
