In this volume, the authors present one of the most pivotal events in Aztec society: the fall of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. The subject is approached through the presentation of key topics and concepts, such as the principal historical figures involved, the arrival of the Spaniards, and the siege and conquest of Tenochtitlan, and through various aspects of Aztec culture. The book is a very clear illustration of the consequences of cultural contact between the Spanish and the Aztecs. Pre- and Post-conflict views of Aztec life depict changes in social religious, and political systems. The historical and archaeological accuracy and the author's use of historic firsthand accounts are impressive, as is the depictions of life and religion from a number of original Aztec texts (such as the Codex Florentino and Codex Mencoza). The text is also lavishly illustrated with vivid pictures produced especially for this particular volume and includes photographs, pullouts, and exploded views. All help to bring the reader a vibrant account of Aztec society as one of the foremost civilizations of Middle America. (Science Books & Films, September/October 1999)
