Most political humor is a form of reasoned argument, but with all the supporting evidence left out. What remains is the jokeand#8212;and those who get it are expected to already know the critique that prompted the gag in the first place. In this book, weand#8217;re not taking any chances. Weand#8217;ve put the evidence back in; on roughly every fourth page, we present a and#8220;Sad Truthand#8221;about George W. Bushand#8217;s presidency, a factual reminder of the painful realities that made this book possible. Think of the Sad
Truths as a brief refresher course on the Bush Years. The photo captions are entirely made up; the Sad Truths are entirely not. The sources for themand#8212;reputable news organizations, research entities, government records, and court decisionsand#8212;are listed in the back.
We donand#8217;t think that George Bushand#8217;s presidency is a laughing matter. Thatand#8217;s why weand#8217;ve written a humor book about it. Sure, time eventually stops the spin, rubs off the makeup, and reveals men and women in power for what they are, and were; but in a democracy, this is a poor consolation prize. Our hope is that we might soon look back on this maddening time and laugh at jokes that arenand#8217;t on us.
