Jillian Crenshaw's career as a prosecuting attorney dominates her life until her mother's sudden death puts her in charge of her nephew and two nieces, who have been in their grandmother's care since Jillian's sister died. Attempting to reunite the children with Tim, their Navy officer father who has recently remarried, Jillian and Tim's brother Marc end up in Tim's RV, driving the children from Virginia to California. Marc is the last person she'd have chosen as a companion on this spur-of-the-moment journey. Ten years before, after their brief affair, Marc dumped Jillian to pursue his art studies abroad. Nevertheless, getting the children resettled so she can resume her career makes this one-week trip seem like a good idea. But their plans change when, in the middle of Texas, the children come down with the chicken pox, forcing a detour to Marc's studio in Santa Fe.
