The Chatelet Apprentice was an engaging mystery, that reads like peeling the layers off an onion (there was a bit of great food descriptions as well!). You could almost feel what it would have been like living in Paris in 1761. The street level descriptions of Paris and the environs, as well as the tensions between the different 'castes' of the populace from the street prostitute to the shop keeper to the marquis, added great depth to the story. The author described with great detail the prisons and cells, forms of torture, as well as the emerging science of forensic discovery. The personalities of the characters and their interactions with one another were also well defined - a great story with lots of unexpected twists.
