This is an unrivaled compendium of every general, Union and Confederate, along with other notable officers; prominent civilian leaders and other significant civilians; military operations (campaigns and battles), often with maps; military organizations; weapons; tactics and strategy; military terms; naval matters; and political issues. In 974 pages, the author cannot be exhaustive on any subject, but a mass of topics and personalities is covered well enough so that a reader will have basic necessary information about all of them. This book is wonderful to have at hand while reading nearly any other Civil War book. The scope of the book is astonishing; it helps to fill in gaps and to provide breadth, depth, and perspective. Anyone more than casually interested in the Civil War will be sorry not to have this book.
