Synopses & Reviews
Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies: Effects on Speech and Resonance is the only book of its kind that covers cleft palate and other orofacial anomalies and noncleft causes of velopharyngeal dysfunction. Designed as a very practical how-to guide, this book covers what clinicians need to know in the workplace, whether they occasionally see patients in this population or serve on a cleft palate team. The book includes information on anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the face and oral cavity, as well as information on genetics, patterns of inheritance, and features of craniofacial syndromes. Several chapters cover oral, dental, and ENT (ear, nose and throat) anomalies and how these anomalies affect speech and resonance, feeding, psychosocial development, and learning. The evaluation section includes a chapter on "low-tech" and "no-tech" procedures that can be used in any clinical setting. Also unique to this text, is a chapter devoted to the intraoral examination. Students and specialists alike will find the instrumental assessment procedures (speech aerodynamics, nasometry, videofluoroscopy and nasopharyngoscopy) useful. The treatment section includes surgical procedures and prosthetic devices. The chapter on speech therapy presents practical techniques that are also demonstrated on the accompanying videos. The need for multidisciplinary team assessment and treatment is emphasized throughout.
Synopsis
Dr. Kummer's Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies: Effects on Speech and Resonance provides comprehensive coverage of a complex subject in a logical progression of learning in which each chapter builds on information from the previous chapter. This is the only text of its kind that covers both oral and facial anomalies in addition to cleft lip and palate. Designed for students, clinicians new to this population, and any member of a cleft palate team, this book emphasizes what practicing clinicians need to know in the workplace. Current research and best practices are summarized for readers. From basic information on anatomy, physiology, and embryololgy of the face and oral cavity to oral, dental and ENT anomalies and their effects on speech, resonance, and feeding this book includes information on common craniofacial anomalies, associated anomalies, and genetic syndromes. The evaluation section includes the perceptual evaluation of speech and resonance, the intraoral examination, and instrumental assessment procedures. The treatment section includes surgical procedures, prosthetic devices, and therapies designed to address speech, resonance, and velopharyngeal dysfunction. The need for multidisciplinary team assessment and treatment is emphasized throughout with contributions from members of a working cleft palate team.
Synopsis
Health care professionals dealing with craniofacial anomalies and genetic syndromes have a one-stop reference and care guideline resource in this comprehensive volume. From basic information on anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the face and oral cavity to details of speech, feeding, and prognoses, the information needed by speech-language pathologists and other caregivers is organized for fingertip access. In addition, surgical techniques are reviewed, along with information on prosthetic devices and the latest therapies.
