Coal is an important fossil fuel resource for many nations due to its large remaining resources, relatively low processing cost and high energy intensity potential. Certain issues surround its utilization, however, including emissions of pollutants and growing concern about climate change. The two volumes of The coal handbook present a systematic and comprehensive review of coal production and utilization in industrial applications, from power plants to steel and iron making, with emphasis on cleaner production. Volume 1 opens with chapters on coal characterization, with following sections addressing important coal extraction and preparation technologies and the coal supply chain. After an introductory section exploring the social and economic value of coal and emissions from coal utilization, Volume 2 concentrates on global coal production and coal use in industry.
