Synopses & Reviews
In the past decade there has been a dramatic change in what constitutes an immunocompromised host. New medications and treatment paradigms have altered the care of patients with chronic immunosuppressive illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS, and advances in cancer therapy has led to a substantial increase in the numbers of patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment regimens such as bone marrow transplantation. This second edition provides dermatologists, oncologists, infectious disease specialists, transplant physicians, hospitalists, primary care doctors, oncology and transplant nurses, residents, and students with an up-to-date tool enabling early recognition of cutaneous manifestations of infection and assisting with the evaluation and management of immunocompromised patients with skin eruptions. Additionally, the editors review typical primary skin infections, opportunistic infections, and disseminated infection metastatic to the skin, as well as discuss how morphology and presentation may be different in immunocompromised hosts.
Review
From the reviews of the second edition: "This is a comprehensive compilation of what is known about the entire spectrum of cutaneous infection in the immunocompromised host. ... this book is intended for any physicians who care for immunocompromised patients, including internists, transplant surgeons, infectious disease specialists, pediatricians, rheumatologists, and hematologist/oncologists. ... This book offers valuable information that is rarely presented in one place. It is a practical guide that can be used in daily practice and belongs in the library of any physician seeing immunocompromised patients." (Renata H. Mullen, Doody's Review Service, April, 2012)
