Do you enjoy listening to a brilliant, pompous friend expound on literature at the highest possible level of abstraction? Are you a Ph.D. candidate in literary criticism? If you answered yes to either question, this book may be for you. Otherwise, not. I fell into the "otherwise, not" camp. Bloom obviously is passionate about his theory of the American sublime, but I could not stomach the pretentious, self-indulgent delivery.
