When he passed away in July 1999, Federica Mancini had served for seventeen years at the Court of Justice of the European Communities, first as an Advocate General and then as a Judge. As such, he participated in some of the most important judicial developments in European Community law to date and witnessed the transformation of the Community into a monetary and, to a certain extent, political union. Throughout this time, he also contributed widely to academic debates and literature on the role of the Court in the process of European integration, the changing nature of the European Union and on specific areas of law such as the protection of fundamental rights and labor law.
