Digital Arts presents an introduction to new media art framed through current debates, and includes case studies derived from the most contemporary research in the field. The unique combination of writers brings depth to the volume - which begins with the historical context of digital arts, moves through to the flux of contemporary forms, and concludes with trends in distribution and archival processes. Starting from artists' imperative to adopt new technologies creatively, the chapters of the book progressively present a study of the impact of the digital upon creative methodologies and upon the exhibition, distribution and archiving of arts networks.
Integrating case studies to illustrate the various concepts discussed, the authors' engage the reader more closely and providing an opportunity for detail within the broad overview the book provides. In addition, boxed reflections and case studies will be employed to highlight important terms, concepts and cases. Consistent with the other volumes in the series, a bullet-point ‘summary' and ‘further reading' section will be provided for each chapter.
About the Author
Cat Hope is currently the head of composition and music technology at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University, Western Australia . She has founded two publications Earwax (2000-2004) and Soundscripts (2005-present), and has convened three academic conferences around new music and art. She is an active composer and performer who also works in video art and installation with a keen interest in the relationship of sound and vision. Cat is currently involved in a new music digital archive research project.
John Charles Ryan is Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the School of Communications and Arts, Edith Cowan University, Western Australia.
