Dr. Blair has some valid ideas concerning need-based learning and mnemonic crutches - too bad he doesn't speak Mandarin so well. The fact that both male readers are obviously not native speakers is very disconcerting; more often than not they use incorrect tones in their pronunciation (and tones are critical in spoken Mandarin). A native speaker would be able to discern their meaning by context, but both readers are poor choices for an educational CD. I found myself constantly pausing the CD to correctly pronounce the words for my third-generation Chinese friends. FWIW, the two female readers are just fine; if they aren't native speakers they at least sound like it. The mentions of how to "spell" various Chinese words is also useless - they should just say that all attempts to Romanize Chinese sounds are only approximations (of which Pinyin is one of the worst, it just happens to have been adopted by the PRC government). Written Chinese uses a system of pictograms, the use of Roman characters is just to help westerners come close to the pronunciation.
