Synopses & Reviews
From the award-winning author of The Innocent Spy comes the next book in this exceptional series set in WWII London
Summer, 1944. After almost five years of conflict, London's inhabitants are exhausted. War-weary DI Ted Stratton is no exception, but he cannot help being drawn in by his latest case. Called on to investigate when a doctor is found dead in Fitzrovia's Middlesex Hospital, Stratton soon realizes that someone involved is not who they appear to be. Someone has discarded their own identity, and that someone is on a killing spree.
Meanwhile Jenny, Ted's wife, who is working at the local recovery center, is also running on fumes. When a bombed-out woman shows up, declaring that the man claiming to be her husband is an imposter, Jenny blames the womans confusion on shock. The reality, however, is much stranger and far more dangerous...
Ultimately, for both Stratton and Jenny perhaps there is only one thing they can really trust: their fear. And for one of them, that fear may prove to be all too real. An Empty Death is a thoroughly riveting thriller.
Review
Praise for The Innocent Spy
"Laura Wilson is an exceptional talent, and The Innocent Spy showcases her numerous gifts. Beautifully written, stunningly plotted, filled with characters we feel we know, yet set in an era that we might not know quite as well as we think. A terrific police procedural, a mesmerizing historical novel -- few writers working today can deliver this kind one-two punch" --Laura Lippman, New York Times bestselling author of What the Dead Know
"Outstanding . . . Wilson convincingly evokes what it was like to sleep in a bomb shelter or stumble through shattered London streets in the dark.” --Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“This is a splendidly atmospheric murder/spy adventure with plenty of twists and turns.... Exceedingly readable and extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended.” --I Love a Mystery
"Kicks off this new series with memorable portraits of witheringly evasive Forbes-James…and family man Stratton, the sort of relative readers would all welcome into their homes."--Kirkus Reviews
"Brilliant . . . this promises to be an exceptional series. Highly recommended."- The Spectator (UK)
"Atmospheric and exciting . . . a great book."-- The Observer (UK)
