Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Faith Hope and Ivy June is an in-depth, insightful and moving story of girls finding their place in their peer group, family and the world. It offers a realistic, but not judgemental, look at the very hard, very poor lives of Applachian coal miners. It also shows how unaware and uninformed most of us - even the citizens of the nearby cities - are when it comes to the Applachian culture. Middle school girls will identify with and cheer for Ivy June and her new big city friend, Catherine.
