The Fenway area of Boston, Massachusetts represents a changing, constantly evolving microcosm of all the forces, pressures, aspirations, shortcomings, and potential opportunities of the process of urbanization in the United States today. In addition to the several different, identifiable residential communities and neighborhoods, and the supporting cultural and commercial amenities, seventy-seven institutions are located within the 900 acre area referred to as the Fenway. The juxtaposition of the long range goals and objectives of these institutions, with the immediate, day to day concerns of the area's residents, has resulted in a very special section of the city, united by objectives and concerns uniquely its own and evidenced by a diverse, yet common character and spirit. The social and economic pressure for sensitive, evolutionary change within this area has been well-articulated and must be accomplished within a framework consistent with the goals and objectives of all the individual groups that, together, comprise the Fenway.
Although the open space parkland of the Back Bay Fens and the general character of the entire Fenway area represents unparalleled potential as an in - town living and working environment, the recent history of the area has shown a marked decline in overall quality. Unfortunately, security problems, a rash of fires of suspicious origin, and a general increase in all types of crime, have contributed to focus the attention of the city on the Fenway in a less than positive manner.
