It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that “writing in the name of another” was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as it is today. In Forged, Ehrman’s fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church. So, if many of the books in the Bible were not in fact written by Jesus’s inner circle—but by writers living decades later, with differing agendas in rival communities—what does that do to the authority of Scripture?

Ehrman investigates ancient sources to:

  • Reveal which New Testament books were outright forgeries.
  • Explain how widely forgery was practiced by early Christian writers—and how strongly it was condemned in the ancient world as fraudulent and illicit.

  • Expose the deception in the history of the Christian religion.

Ehrman’s fascinating story of fraud and deceit is essential reading for anyone interested in the truth about the Bible and the dubious origins of Christianity’s sacred texts.

Synopsis

"In FORGED New York Times bestselling author, Bart Ehrman, reveals another hidden scandal of the Bible. For centuries, scholars have known that not all of the books in the New Testament are authentic while the general public has been blissfully unaware. The books of the New Testament are widely assumed to be written accounts of Jesus's life...

Synopsis

Reveals which books in the New Testament were forged, how these forgeries were used in the history of the early church, and why they undermine the authority of the Bible.

Synopsis

In what promises to be a much-debated book, the best-selling author of Jesus, Interrupted reveals which books in the New Testament were forged—and explains why that's far more significant than many biblical scholars are willing to admit. 100,000 first printing.

In 1946, I preached my first sermon, I was 16. At 17, I was accepted as a candidate for the ministry of the UCC http://www.united-church.ca/ Jokingly I add: I didn't know what I was talking about, but I sure knew how to talk. But seriously, even as a teenager I read the Bible with a questioning mind. Of course, just like many newspapers, there is a core of truth in the Bible, but even the Bible warns: Be aware of false prophets. I will always remember the comment made by the then Dean of us theological students when he first addressed us: Lady--we had one female member of the class--and gentlemen, please do not leave your brains in your hat when you come into any of my classes. I was impressed. Frequently, I have used this comment as a prelude to my preaching and teaching about the Bible. Interestingly, this opened up the opportunity for me to use more of the Bible than is normally used in our churches. For example, this gave me the opportunity to read, from the pulpit, passages like that found in Deuteronomy 20--CONCERNING WAR. Take a look at verse 16: Does anyone really believe that God said: "But when you capture cities in the land that the Lord your God is giving you, kill everyone ... etc." By the way, ABOUT WHO IS TO BE EXCLUDED FROM THE LORD'S PEOPLE: Deut. 23:1-6 is contradicted by Isaiah 56:1-6 And this is only the beginning.
