Synopses & Reviews
Frommer’s Best Walking in Scotlandintended for people for whom a good hike is an integral part of their vacation plans. It highlights the “best-of-the-best” of Scotland’s many hiking choices, focusing on accessible day hikes for a variety of abilities, plus some of the country’s most popular multi-day options. The book will follow Frommer’s usual highly organized approach: clear, thorough instructions on how to prepare for their trip; detailed breakdowns of the hikes themselves with easy-to-understand route instructions; star ratings and reasons to go; and lots of maps. In addition, the book will provide accommodation and dining options geared to the outdoor enthusiast; GPS directions for trailheads and route wayfinding; and a full-color naturalist’s guide for wildlife identification.
In addition to the hikes themselves, each chapter will contain: hike index, trailhead map, 1-2 page write-up on the unique characteristics of the area, and an accommodation and dining guide.
The hikes will cover the entire country, including:
- Beautiful day hikes that include small towns only an hour or two from Edinburgh and Glasgow
- The incredible scenery and variety of the Borders region, with everything from half-day strolls to the world-renowned 340 km Southern Upland Way
- The magnificent coastline and forest walks of Galloway, with bustling market towns and peaceful villages dotted throughout.
- The dazzling highland scenery and well-marked trails of Perthshire
- The wild glens and sparkling lochs that wind their way through Loch Lomond, Scotland’s first national park
- A diverse choice of landscapes near Argyll and the whiskey distilleries of Oban
- An array of easy walks that combine castles, Speyside whisky and coastal trails near Inverness and Aberdeen
