Synopsis
The American Civil War was a bloody conflict which cost more lives in four years than the two World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam added together. Approximately one hundred and eighty six thousand black soldiers served valiantly in the conflict, but no black person was allowed to rise above the rank of Sergeant. This is black slave Joshua D's story. He tells of his escape from slavery on John Franklyn's estate in North Carolina and how he became a soldier and, later, a Sergeant, in the Union Army.
