"The Gay Teen" is the first volume to explore the unique issues facing homosexual adolescents and equip teachers, counsellors and curriculum specialists with the knowledge and skills needed to educate and support gay students.
Written by and for gay and straight educators, "The Gay Teen" explores gay student adolescence from discursive, practical and theoretical perspectives. Essays in the first section of the volume are designed to introduce and sensitize educators to the complexities of gay identity and set forth some of the issues besetting gay youth in high schools: alienation from peer groups, low academic achievement, violence, substance abuse, and the absence of gay teacher role models.
Many essays in the volume focus on the subject matter and teacher methodology central to the education of gay, lesbian and bisexual high school students. Contributors survey "gay-friendly" curricula in a number of subject areas, including literature, sex education, sports, and social studies. Vital teaching strategies, intervention techniques and staff training recommendations form an interal part of the analyses and are designed to help teachers and counsellors better address the academic and psychological needs of gay students and redress homophobia in the school setting.
