Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. A commendable effort at documenting the vanished elements of a city that is changing faster than most. This anthology embraces a variety of media--comics, photos, graphic design, essays, poetry, interviews, you name it--for an eclectic portrait of now-you-see-it-now-you-don't Seattle. Thanks to the diversity of the contributions, there is something here for everyone--and conversely there are entries that might strike a sour note with some readers. But isn't that an apt metaphor for city living in general? This is an important work of urban anthropology that's a must for Seattle residents both established and new that also contains relevant lessons for anyone concerned about gentrification and the loss of the local, wherever you happen to call home.
