Synopsis
The land and marshes East and North of Beaufort, NC was, and still is a very unique place. The Pine trees and Cedars grow hand in hand with the marsh grass, mixed in with salt air from the Sounds. Many books have been written about this area where schedules are set by tides almost as much by the hands of a clock. This book tells the story of what life was like for the people who fished and farmed the area. It was a tough life for most, there were no air conditioners in summer, when the heat was unyielding upon the water. Winter could be just as harsh, if not more so. Fishing still went on in 20 degrees just as much as it did when the mercury topped 100. Money was tight, it seemed there was never enough and tired backs took a back seat to the needs of the family. This was a time when Congregations gathered at Church and gave thanks for what they had. Come see how things were, back in the 1950s in this time before Cell phones and the Internet, along the Coast of Carteret County, North Carolina.
