At a time when education is increasingly coming under attack by absurdly and what often appear to be deliberately ignorant factions, this book is a scientific breath of fresh air. Insidious attempts are being made to undermine the teaching of science in the classroom. I particularly enjoy his reference to "Intelligent Design" as "Creationists in Cheap Tuxedos!" If, after reading this book, you still have doubts, well, what can I say.
His intelligence and wit shine through, presenting layers of scientific evidence from living examples of natural selection to clues in the fossil record. He presents an airtight case that we are the "direct consequence of evolution by non-random selection." Illustrations abound; the blue-footed booby dance, "to impress other boobies" the detailed illustration of plate tectonics, and "breathtakingly complicated" single cell "far from being just a bag full of juice," are among my favorites, or, as Richard would spell, "favourites."
