Morton is aimed squarely at the beleagured reference librarians who will soon have to cope with the onslaught of comet-inspired term papers. Entries are drawn primarily from readily available US newspapers and journals, with some British material. A good cross-section of local newspapers and 149 19th-century references round out the work. For its audience [school libraries, public libraries, and college or university libraries], Morton is superior and strongly recommended.Choice

This annotated bibliography was compiled by a reference librarian, who has also provided an interesting introduction summarizing the public reaction to the Halley's comet apparitions of 1759, 1835, 1910, and coming in 1986. The bibliography contains 1301 references, selectively drawn from English-language sources.... Emphasis is on popular reactions, but there are quite a few citations to the scientific literature as well. The annotations are basically abstracts two or three sentences in length. Recommended for comprehensive collections on Halley's comet.Library Journal
