Synopsis
Excerpt from Harborpark Update: Charlestown Navy Yard, 1986
By proposing a series of public spaces and public facilities which will provide opportunities for recreational and cultural activities. In the Charlestown Navy Yard many significant new open spaces are being created including the 16-acre Shipyard Park which has a tot lot and fountain, a meadow-like character, a public docking facility at Pier 4, and when completed a promenade around Drydock 2. Shipyard Park also has a public performance area for use by artists and musicians. New pocket parks will be created such as Anchor Park, once an outdoor storage area used by the Navy. Historic Flirtation Walk, where Charlestown residents once promenaded, will be recreated. In addition, the creation of a wintergarden is being explored. Two new museum displays relative to the Navy Yard's shipbuilding past will be developed in the Chain Forge building and at the Ropewalk.
