Head Check is the next best thing to a ride of your own this afternoon. The writing is hand-tooled and efficient in like good gear ought to be, and the threads of story will pull you out of the tedium of your workday into your daydreams and opinions. I've heard all of these stories firsthand (spoiler alert, I'm the Daughtergirl), and I've still found myself snorting aloud, talking back, and even misting up while diving into the book.

My dad had motorcycles and although it was to save money on transportation, there's no doubt that having his daughter on the seat behind him with a helmet entirely too large for her small body was a total chick magnet. I remember motorcyclists giving each other a "high sign" as they rode past in unity and camaraderie. I now ride a scooter and very rarely get a "high sign," but when I do, I feel that same sense of solidarity -- and that solidarity comes through in spades in Jack Lewis' "Head Check -- What it Feels Like to Ride Motorcycles." It may be solidarity with other riders, with the road, or even with yourself, but it's clear that What it Feels Like to Ride Motorcycles is far more than getting from Point A to Point B. It involves getting to know your machine, your surroundings and (again) yourself. Jack Lewis has taken a lot of journeys in his life -- we're very fortunate that he's the type of rider and writer that takes us along with him.

Whether you are a motorcyclist, want to be a motorcyclist, used to be a motorcyclist, or think motorcycles are the most dangerous things on the planet, Lewis will take you along for the ride. It's not about the motorcycle, the weather, the road, or who sees (or doesn't) you out on your bike. It's about getting straight with yourself in your head, learning (sometimes the hard way) to be true to yourself, and letting others do the same whether or not we agree with their paths. Lewis takes us along on his journey, as much as anyone can. While he pokes fun at all of us, himself included, you just might learn something important, too.

Head Check could very well be named Heart Check. I'll start with small disclaimers- I did not grow up with a passion for motorcycles. Many of the references that Jack makes to make, model and engines are lost on me. While I love to ride now, my view from the motorcycle is the view over my Sweetie's shoulder. NONE of that lessens my enjoyment of Jack's writing or this book. What you will be reading , thru the view of a motorcycle rider, is a lesson on life, and living it fully thru the ups, down and sideways that the world - or the road - may present to you. This is not a book I read quickly. There are chapters to be savored, and images you will want to read and reread to truly appreciate. It is a book you will want to share with friends and family. You've said you already heard it from the one who matters most, Pretty Wife, but Welcome Home Jack.

I'm a rider, but I don't read motorcycle magazines. Most of the articles dwell on displacement and specifications, and even the 'interest stories' usually don't have a level of writing that can hold my interest for long. Certainly nothing I'd read and re-read. Lewis is different. I can (and have) read his work over and over, and I still catch my breath in places, admire a turn of phrase, or realize he's elucidated a thought I hadn't quite managed to have. If you love motorcycles, you should definitely buy this book. If you love someone who loves motorcycles, get two copies. You'll learn why we risk our lives for these crazy mechanical beasts, and your friend isn't going to loan you their copy. ;-)

This is a terrific book! A collection of short (and not so short) stories, some of which may seem familiar if you follow Jack's columnn in Motorcyclist magazine, but appearing as G-d and author intended, in their gloriously unabridged form. They are stories about bikes, and bikers, but it's not just a "biker book". It's a collection of feelings, and adventures, and interactions on a very personal level. Motorcycles may be the common point around which the tales revolve, but this is collection of very engaging humanity.

I have been riding motorcycles for 55 years and the writers on the subject that truly capture my attention and hold it are few and far between. Jack Lewis is one of those rare people who can seize my interest and imagination and take me on a thoughtful and exciting journey. In ‘Head Check’ Jack manages to weave his life's adventures and a passion for motorcycles in a way that is rare in a world that seems to be ground down to mediocrity. It’s not just the thrill of speed, the close calls and the joy of the open road, it also weaves Jack’s insightful analysis of his life experiences that he draws upon to exercise the writer’s craft into his lifelong love affair with motorcycles. A touch of Kerouac, a taste of T E Lawrence and a lot of Jack Lewis. Thanks for the adventure.

There are times that I feel as if the lifestyle of a motorcyclist might be viewed as an immature or unnecessarily risky by those who aren't well versed in motorcycles. Too often, it is simply explained away to the masses as "if you don't get it then you don't get it." until this book came along. Whether your life has changed because of motorcycles or you simply may find yourself curious as to why we willingly saddle up every day then this fantastic collection of short stories will make you laugh, wonder, sympathize, and hopefully understand why we wave at one another on the road across the world.
