Synopses & Reviews
This book is a collection of the often-overlooked stories of South Carolina's Grand Strand over the past 500 years. From the lost Spanish flagship Capitana in 1526 to the vanished villages of La Grange and Lafayette and the aborted great canal on North Island, to the U-Boats that reportedly roamed the Intracoastal Waterway with the help of local collaborators, this book examines the historical stories that seemingly apply to every inch of the coast. Along the way, this work explores a few local myths as well, from the abandoned pirate Drunken Jack to the haunted wrecks of the Freeda A. Wyley and the USS Harvest Moon, the illegal casino in the tower of the majestic Ocean Forest, and the U-Boat pens on the Waccamaw river. Simmons' first book with THP (Defending South Carolina's Coast) has earned him the cooperation of local historians and librarians. The Georgetown Library has given him permission to use dozens of rare photographs in the proposed work.
