About the Author
Raymond R. Hatton, an associate professor of geography at Central Oregon Community College, lives in Bend, Oregon, with his wife Sylvia, and two children, Peter and Janice. A native of England, he was awarded a track scholarship at the University of Idaho in 1956. He graduated witha B.S. (Ed.) degree in 1960. Later he completed an M. Ed. degree at the University of Idaho and an M.A degree in geography at the University of Oregon.
Since 1969, the author has taught geography at Central Oregon Community College in Bend. In recent years he has devoted considerable research into the historical geography of different parts of Central Oregon. His first book, Bend Country Weather and Climate, was completed in 1973 and revised in 1977. High Deser of Central Oregon was published by Binford & Mort, Portland, in 1977. A third book, Bend in Central Oregon, also published by Binford & Mort, was completed in 1978.
Mr. Hatton has hiked Central Oregon mountain trails, climbed many of the Cascade peaks, and explored forests, lakes, lava flows, lava caves, and cinder cones. He has followed the course of the Deschutes River and seen its various moods and settings. Here you will trace the course of that river from its source in the high lakes, through man-created reservoirs, down the white-water rapids, past peaceful meadows and beautiful pine forests, into Bend.
