Elected deputy for Lisieux in 1830, Guizot was made Minister of the Interior after the July revolution, and then Minister of Public Instruction, an office which he occupied in several cabinets. In 1840 he was sent as ambassador to London, but was soon recalled to enter the Soult ministry, of which he was the real head From that date to 1848 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, but practically directed the home policy of the country quite as much as its foreign policy. His obstinacy in refusing to make any concession to the Liberal party brought about the revolution of 1848, after which he fled to England. This was the end of his political career.
