Synopsis
Vol. 1 of a 2 vol. set. A history of prostitution among all the people of the world, from the most remote antiquity to the present day. Translated from the French, with an introduction by Samuel Putnam. Prostitution, in ancient and modern history, exhibits three distinct forms, or degrees, which belong to three different epochs of the life of peoples: 1. Guest Prostitution; 2. Sacred Prostitution; 3. Legal or Political Prostitution. These degrees are examined in their many and various realizations in ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, and early modern to modern Europe, particularly France. Contains much discussion of prostitution and the kings of France.
