I read this book at a time in my life when things were going fine. My relationship with God was growing due to good pastor teaching and my own study and prayer times. However, upon ready this book I realized how much I lacked in spiritual depth. John and Joanna shared their story with such vulnerability that I felt encouraged and inspired to drop defenses that I became aware of while reading this book and trust God even more. They keep it real without a lot of Christian verbiage.
Suffering is never a favorite subject even for Christians who are suppose to expect it in this life. The Stumbos dig out the gold in this dark and painful experience and they opened their lives to us to view their own honest, human responses to a God who they prove is Good.
Their story makes me proud to be a Christian and I rarely feel that way in these days and times in the United States. Read this book and see an example of how Eph. 6:10-12 is lived out and what humility, married love, God's love look like and how prayer works, and the practical application of so many scriptures in the Bible.
I read his next book too and I enjoyed it and learned more.
