This book has been around for a long time, but why I haven't read it before is beyond me.
If you're fascinated by ancient Roman history, then you'll love this book. It is an excellent historical fiction covering the Roman empire from Augustus to Claudius, who was the fourth Emperor of Rome. It's full of intrigue, deaths by poisoning, scandal, betrayal, and much more.
I have always heard that ancient Rome is a model of the family unit and therefore, close family ties, however this account makes me question the truthfulness of that thought. Historically, this was really a time of being constantly on guard and watching very closely every word and every action that was made. It was a time of extreme paranoia by the royal family and also by their subjects. We may look at this time period in a romantic light, but it wasn't always innocence, lovely, and privileged.
By far the best book I've read in years. I was captured from the very beginning. I hope you'll like it, too.
