Perhaps one of the best known--cetainly, the most impressive collection to come immediately to mind--where noted Western anthropologists Mead and Bateson (read that: people who mnae the rules and knew when tey were violating them!) have intrued, conscpicuously so, introduced Western atistical material culture and encouraged new directions in regional artistic development. The result, collected in a single, edoubtable volume over two years in the late 1930s,remains one of the brightest examples of artistic confluences between the sacred worlds of Balinese art and the Western commodification of a here-to-fore unknown world of island ritual and magic, where native ritual and the sacrrd and quotidian life blend seamlessly, betraying not the least sense of discomfort. This volume belongs among the reading materials of all with an interest in Asian arts or with an interest in East-West relations. This is clearly a must-read for all who are curious what happens when alien worlds do, in fact, collide. . .. The results are anything but expected, predictable. They are just as certainly unforgetable.
