Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This is a very interesting and well written journal describing life in the Italian province of Umbria in the early days of the German occupation, the dissolution of Facsim and the entrance of the Allied forces that liberated Italy. While Iris Origo had great intellect and insight into the politics of the time, she wrote the story from both her privileged perspective and that of the ordinary Italian people who were her neighbors, friends and employees. I picked this up in an English language bookstore on a recent visit to Florence at the recommendation of one of the staff. It was a wonderful travel read! I would have enjoyed it anyway but love the experience reading something historical about a place while I am there. I've also recommended it to a colleague who teaches Modern World History. The introduction and preface are helpful for understanding the context of the events she narrates, making them come alive in a new way. A great read for anyone who loves history, Italy, travel writing and biography!
