Powell's Staff:
Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This product is amazing; if you have a base in the language. I've been studying the Japanese language as a lay-person for a number of years. When a few friends mentioned that they'd like to start learning Japanese we took a trip down to Powell's to get them some learning materials. The cards were picked up on a whim, not being sure if they would be useful or not. My friend, who had next to no knowledge of Japanese at the time, had trouble making heads or tails of them. However, when I picked them up and started to go through them I found that they were a simple, easy source of vocabulary. The cards each provide a word, phrase, or sentence fragment before providing between 2 and 4 examples of how the phrase is used in a sentence. If you don't know what the word is, you flip over the card and see the English translation. The only downfall I can see with these cards is the use of romaji on the learning side. It is a distraction and teaches the student to be dependent on roman characters rather than immersing themselves in kana. However, the cards are so small that you can simply cover the romaji side of the card with your thumb and read directly off of the kana. With the easy-to-use nature of the cards you can take 20 or so with you to memorize on bus rides or if you simply have a few free minutes in your day. The words provided are actually useful for everyday speech and thensome, ranging from 'animal' [dobutsu] to 'application form' [ouboyoushi] to past-time activities such as baseball [yakyuu; beesu booru].
