This book has no purpose other than to be a historic document of just how far dog training has come... and how bad it used to be. This book was very popular in its time; I am ashamed that our society used to treat dogs in this manner. (published in 1962) A quote from page 188, "Next, equip yourself with a man's leather belt or a strap heavy enough to give your particular dog a good tanning. Yup - we're going to strike him. Real hard." [snip] Thunder through the door or gate, snatch up the belt that you've conveniently placed, and descend on him. He'll have no chance to dodge if you grab the line and reel him in until his front feet are raised off the floor, or, if he's a big dog, until you've snubbed him up with a hitch or something. While he's held in close, lay the strap vigorously against his thighs. Keep pouring it on him until he thinks it's the bitter end. A real whaling now may cut down somewhat on the number of repeat performances that will be necessary." The "problem" the author is instructing the reader to correct? Barking. This book is full of many more examples of this nature. It's a wonder that any dogs still exist and want to be in our lives after being subjected to such abuse. Buy it only for your library as a novel antiquity, and a reminder to be kind to your dog each and every day... his ancestors were not so lucky.
