Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I have not read this book, but I knew the author for several years immediately prior to the period of its publication, so I offer a personal caveat. In my opinion the problem with this book is that I do not believe that Hub Miller ever actually built a laminated wood boat. He was a fan of them, and briefly owned a coventionally planked wood power boat, but to my knowledge he never was a boat builder. He was an architect by training, a talented artist (paint), and was a great sketch artist of some unusual power boats that reflected his own design concepts. However, to my knowledge the only boat he ever designed to completion was a 16 foot open launch; this was a very pretty little boat custom built for him in fiberglass. His current web site is www.hubmilleronline.com, and no mention is made his supposed boat building days. I would therefore approach the advice this book offers with caution.
