Synopsis
To Bea Ellis and the confused homicide bureaus of three central Oregon counties, the cause of Karen Kaelas drowning is an enigma, given Karenas unblemished character. What has happened seems as lost to recovery as the first ever to deceive and to shed human blood, or for that matter the history of the ancient mountain into which the latest victim of homicide has been sent on her final journey. Bea, her friends, and police chief Dunleavy find themselves squeezed between the investigation and an urgent need to shield the victimas grandparents. In this latest of Beaas reluctant descents into psyches given to deception and murder, the conclusion they reach is no less hard to countenance than it is unavoidable.
