Le triomphe de la foi catholique et de l'intolerance fut porte jusqu'aux nues, quand Louis XIV crut avoir aneanti le protestantisme francais; on frappa des medailles en l'honneur de l'extinction de l'heresie, une statue de bronze fut elevee, dans l'hotel de ville de Paris, a Louis-le-Grand toujours vainqueur, defenseur de la majeste de l'Eglise et des rois.
Cependant le droit des libres consciences a prevalu contre les edits et les dragons du grand roi, contre les edits et les dragons de ses successeurs. A defaut de medailles et de statues, auxquelles ils ne songeaient guere, les hommes de coeur et de foi dont le courage et la perseverance ressusciterent l'Eglise reformee, ont-ils du moins leur part legitime dans la reconnaissance de ceux qui recueillent les fruits de leur devouement?
