Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

, July 20, 2013
I am helping my committed partner prepare her house (of 51 years) for sale and move into one of the apartments in my apartment building. She has a large and extraordinary collection of books. Yesterday, I ran across Ellen Kintz book and looked it over fairly carefully since I, too, spent a considerable portion of my young adulthood in the territory of the former Mayan civilization: the southeastern portion of that territory, located in what is now western El Salvador. From what I have gathered already, she did an very good job of following and recording life in a village that (in the beginning of her time there) was small and rather isolated and (over a period of some 15 years) developed into a much larger town and one that was much more connected to the contemporary culture of southeastern Mexico. The similarities with my own experience are very apparent. I am looking forward to reading her book, cover to cover. Knowles Dougherty, Ph.D. 2100 14th Avenue South Apartment 3 Minneapolis MN 55404
