This is the first in the 'Star of the Guardians' series by Margaret Weis. While the storyline is somewhat Arthurian in nature, the author's finely honed characters, settings, and circumstances elevate this book to one of the top books I've read. It encompasses science fiction, military strategies, revolution, and the nature of religion. It also demonstrates that no matter what the setting, an author can cause you to care about the characters and consider what really constitutes loyalty, honor and committment to one's beliefs.
I read this book and series every couple of years, and it never fails to engage my full attention. I'd recommend it highly!
