About the Author
In 1939 Manstein was appointed Chief of Staff for Rundstedt's Army Group South where he served for the conquest of Poland. Manstein commanded an infantry corps in France and rose to command a panzer corps during Operation Barbararossa. Following his conquest of the Crimea he was promoted to field marshal and given command of Army Group Don. Manstein continued as an army group commander until he was relieved by Hitler in 1944.
