About the Author

Susan McCartney studied fine art and graphic design at the Hammersmith College of Art in London and the Cooper Union in New York, and refined her photography and vision at evening classes given by Richard Avedon, Alexey Brodovitch, Harold Kreiger, Walter Rosenblum, and Melvin Sokolsky. She has a degree in photography from the School of Visual Arts. While getting established she worked as a United Nations Guide and at various travel and art jobs and assisted briefly until becoming a professional photographer.
Susan has shot assignments in the U.S. and overseas for a diverse clientele including British Airways, the British Tourist Authority, Caravan Tours, Club Europa, the Irish Tourist Board, Lan Chile Airlines, the London Daily Mirror, the Economist, Glamour, House and Garden, Scholastic, Shell, Time, Travel/Holiday, Travel and Leisure, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Postal Service, Varig Airlines, Warner Brothers Records, Woman's Day, and more. Her personal photographs have been featured in Life, the New York Times magazine, Nikon World, and Popular Photography. She has shown and talked about her work at the Smithsonian Institute as well as on public television. Her stock appears in magazines and advertising around the world and she has received awards from the Art Director¹s Club of New York and Communication Arts magazine.
Susan has authored three popular books, all in print. Her Travel Photography: A Complete Guide to How to Shoot and Sell, is just out in its updated second edition and has already received excellent reviews in Publisher's Weekly and Library Journal. She has also written Nature and Wildlife Photography: A Practical Guide to How to Shoot and Sell. Both books are published by Allworth Press in New York. Her Mastering Flash Photography is published by Amphoto Books in New York.
